Sunscreen stains: how to clean your favourite summer outfits!

Everyone knows that sunscreen is indispensable on sunny days. Unfortunately, it does sometimes leave nasty stains on your favourite outfit. Luckily, you don't have to discard that cute summer dress or shiny white T-shirt just yet. With a few simple household remedies, you can get rid of those annoying stains in no time!

Here is how

It is actually due to its composition that a sunscreen product leaves grease stains. So it is best to treat those with a grease-dissolving product. Start with some green soap and hot water. Gently rub in the mixture with an old toothbrush and let it soak for a few hours. Then wash your garment as usual.

No green soap on hand?
Then washing-up liquid can save the day, as it is a powerful grease remover that can tackle the toughest sunscreen product. Dab some on the stain, let it soak for a while and then put the garment in the washing machine. 

Another, perhaps somewhat surprising tip from the kitchen: dishwasher rinse aid! Pour a small amount directly onto the stain and let it soak for a few hours. Then rinse well and wash the garment.

Is the stain still visible?
Just lay your wet garment outside in the sun. UV light has a natural bleaching effect and helps to break down the stain further. 

Repeat the above treatments if necessary. And as always: the sooner you can treat a strain, the greater the chance of a spotless result!

  • The yellowish sunscreen stains are caused by the oil in the product reacting with the mineral titanium dioxide that protects your skin from the sun.

  • The warmer the water you use to treat stains, the better it dissolves grease.

  • Rubbing in a product with a toothbrush ensures that it penetrates deeper into the fibres.

  • Rinse aid is not just great for glassware, but also for your clothes!

  • White garments are best dried in the sun – the UV light helps to lighten up stains and gives them that lovely fresh outdoor scent.
