How to organise and tackle a thorough clean

A full-on clean is a task we would gladly postpone. As it may feels like an overwhelming amount of work, you often do not really know where to start. Yet, a thorough clean will make all the difference in your home, providing you with a calmer and genuinely fresh feeling.

Setting out with the right structure will make a spring clean more manageable. This blog will help you to organise a deep clean, to combine tidying and cleaning and to tackle the task at hand efficiently without becoming overwhelmed.

A deep clean = tidying up and cleaning

Many people just throw themselves into cleaning and actually skip the most important step: tidying up. As long as you keep working around clutter, you will not be cleaning thoroughly. So, a thorough clean does not start with a mop, but with making choices. What stays in? What goes out? What is in the wrong place? By decluttering and organising first, cleaning becomes much easier and more sustainable.

Step 1: Decluttering – what goes and what stays?

Before you start cleaning, go through all your belongings. This does not have to be extreme, but do be honest:

  • Do you still use it?

  • Does it have a fixed place?

  • Does it make your space better or more cluttered?

Dare to be decisive. Anything that you no longer use gets given away, sold or recycled. The fewer things you keep, the less there is to clean.

Step 2: Organising – give everything a place

What’s left gets a logical home. That sounds simple, but it makes a real difference. If everything has a fixed place, keeping your home tidy becomes much easier. Think and work in zones: kitchen items in the kitchen, work items with work items, and so on. This creates calm and provides overview.

Step 3: Cleaning – only now does it make sense

Only when everything has been sorted and organised do you start cleaning. Now you can clean thoroughly, without any obstacles or delays. You no longer need to move objects around or work around stuff. Always stick to a clear, logical order:

  • Start with dry cleaning (dust and loose dirt)

  • Follow up with wet cleaning

  • Finish with the floor

This way, you work efficiently and avoid doing the same job twice.

Work per room, not per task

A deep clean works best when you focus on one room at a time. You see results faster, which keeps you motivated. In each room, go through the same three steps: Declutter – Organise – Clean. This repetition creates structure and a sense of calm.

Do not skip these often overlooked spots

A deep clean is all about the details. So, make sure not to forget:

  • The tops of cupboards

  • Skirting boards and doors

  • Inside drawers

  • Switches and handles

  • Household appliances such as the oven or fridge

These are the areas you usually skip during regular cleans. They will, however, make a noticeable and satisfying difference when tackled during a full-on clean.

How to keep it manageable

A deep clean does not have to be an overwhelming marathon task. Break it up into smaller blocks and set clear limits. One room per day or a few hours at a time is often enough. By splitting up the work, it remains manageable and you do not lose motivation. And just as important: don’t aim for perfection. Progress is what counts.

The real benefit: results that last

The difference between a quick clean and a full-on clean shows afterwards. By decluttering and organising properly first:

  • You have less to maintain

  • Your home stays tidy for longer

  • Your weekly cleaning becomes easier

This way, you create a clean home and more peace of mind.
