Cleaning your iron in a heartbeat

Nothing really beats the pleasure of freshly ironed laundry. Unfortunately, the iron itself does not always follow suit, especially the underside ('the sole') that can become dirty or the machine that needs descaling. With the tips below, take good care of your iron and ironing will be going more smoothly.

How to clean the sole of your iron

If you iron over a print, it may stick to the sole, making it harder to go over your textile garments afterwards.

  1. Make sure your iron is switched off.

  2. Dip a clean cloth in vinegar and rub it over the sole.

  3. If stains remain persistent, have your iron soak on a cloth soaked in vinegar for a while.

  4. Wash out the steam holes with a toothbrush, ear sticks or cotton buds.

How to descale your iron

The most current problem occurs when too much lime builds up in your machine. So, timely descaling comes highly recommended. Many machines have a descaling button or indicate when you should do so. This is how you go about it.

Mix a cup of water with a cup of vinegar and pour it into the water reservoir.

  1. Heat the iron and press the steam button a few times.

  2. Turn the iron back off and let the mixture do its magic for an hour.

  3. Empty the reservoir and rinse it a few times with clean water.

Did you know that?

  • To avoid limescale, it is best to always use distilled water.

  • Clean the sole after each use: swipe the sole with a damp cloth before storing your iron. This will remove fluff and dust from the steam holes and prevent them from clogging.

  • Iron at the right temperature. If you set it too high, fluff will stick to your iron more easily.

  • Always empty your reservoir when finished, to prevent limescale building up.
